Fugitive emissions in upstream oil production facilities, Oman"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Drawing on its extensive experience in <strong>LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair)<\/strong> methodologies, EHS Techniques was contracted to carry out a <strong>fugitive emission detection campaign<\/strong> at several <strong>crude oil production facilities<\/strong> located in the desert of the <strong>Sultanate of Oman<\/strong>.<br>The project, commissioned by one of the region\u2019s leading energy companies, aimed to <strong>identify and quantify leaks of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/strong> and other potentially harmful gases, thereby supporting emission reduction efforts and enhancing the environmental performance of the facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scope of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign covered a wide range of infrastructure associated with crude oil extraction and processing, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Active and maintenance-phase extraction wells.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three <strong>crude processing plants<\/strong> with distinct production configurations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Valve nodes and manifolds<\/strong>, identified as key potential emission points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage systems and internal hydrocarbon transfer pipelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The scope involved the <strong>identification, localisation, and documentation of fugitive emissions<\/strong>, along with the preparation of a <strong>comprehensive technical report<\/strong> including recommendations for repair and ongoing monitoring.<br>This work provided a <strong>baseline of emissions<\/strong> across the facilities \u2014 an essential element for future environmental audits and emission reduction strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology Applied<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EHS Techniques implemented a combination of internationally recognised technologies and standards for fugitive emission detection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visual and thermographic inspection<\/strong> using <strong>infrared (IR) cameras<\/strong> to detect invisible gas leaks under challenging field conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quantitative measurement<\/strong> using a <strong>Flame Ionisation Detector (FID)<\/strong> following <strong>USEPA Method 21<\/strong>, the international standard for VOC leak detection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geo-referenced recording<\/strong> of each leak point using integrated GPS systems, ensuring full traceability of results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leak classification by criticality<\/strong>, assessing environmental impact, safety risk, and repair priority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corrective and preventive maintenance recommendations<\/strong> to reduce recurrence and improve asset management efficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>All fieldwork was carried out under <strong>strict safety and quality protocols<\/strong>, complying with local environmental regulations and international best practice standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SLDAR campaign conducted by EHS Techniques in Oman enabled the operating company to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Significantly reduce fugitive emissions<\/strong>, improving the environmental performance of its operations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Achieve full
