pharmaceutical companies located in Catalonia<\/strong>, in compliance with the requirements set by Spanish and European environmental regulations.<br>Several Autonomous Communities, including Catalonia, now <strong>require the submission of Baseline Reports<\/strong> under <strong>Royal Decree 9\/2005<\/strong> and <strong>Directive 2010\/75\/EU on Industrial Emissions (IED)<\/strong>, as part of the Integrated Environmental Authorisation (IEA) process.<br>EHS Techniques\u2019 experience in this field ensures the <strong>accurate determination of soil and groundwater quality conditions<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>identification of potential contamination<\/strong> resulting from past or ongoing industrial activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scope of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project involved the <strong>complete preparation of Baseline Reports<\/strong> for three pharmaceutical sites with different operational characteristics.<br>Key activities carried out included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Documentary review and historical data collection<\/strong>, including inventories of hazardous substances, storage and handling practices, and waste management records.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Site characterisation<\/strong>, defining geological, hydrogeological, and land-use conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identification of potentially contaminated zones<\/strong> associated with the use of solvents, reagents, and other chemicals typical of the pharmaceutical sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design and execution of sampling campaigns<\/strong> for both soil and groundwater, with strategically selected locations to ensure representativeness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evaluation of analytical results<\/strong> against regional and national reference thresholds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Determination of the need for further investigation or remediation<\/strong>, when contaminant levels exceeded regulatory limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In some facilities, the <strong>detection of subsurface contamination<\/strong> required <strong>additional investigation and remediation phases<\/strong>, employing advanced techniques such as <strong>high-vacuum extraction, pump-and-treat systems, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO)<\/strong> and <strong>enhanced biodegradation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methodology Applied<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EHS Techniques adopted an <strong>integrated, regulatory, and scientific approach<\/strong>, ensuring data reliability and compliance.<br>The main project phases included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preliminary site assessment (Phase I)<\/strong> through documentation review, site inspection, and interviews with facility staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exploratory and detailed investigation (Phase II)<\/strong> involving drilling, piezometer installation, and soil and groundwater sampling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accredited laboratory analyses<\/strong> for organic and inorganic parameters (heavy metals, chlorinated solvents, hydrocarbons, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interpretation of results and risk evaluation<\/strong>, comparing findings with national and regional reference values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Definition of the
