Environmental liability assessment

Pioneers in environmental risk studies and technical assessment on environmental accidents.

Pioneers in the preparation of environmental risk analysis and environmental accident expertise

The Environmental Liability Directive requires preventing and repairing damage to the environment, applying the “polluter pays” principle. At EHS Techniques we integrate this principle from the outset, preparing complete, realistic and rigorous environmental risk analyses (ARMA) , including their monetization, an essential tool for determining the amount of the financial guarantee.

In addition, our ALERT EHS program is a specialized emergency response and environmental risk management service that helps industry minimize risks and associated costs in the event of an accident.

What services do we offer in Environmental Risk Management?

  • Environmental risk analysis (ARMA) including monetization
We identify potential damage to surface water, soils, subsoil, ecosystems, protected species and habitats. We quantitatively assess environmental damages and calculate the economic cost associated with their remediation, allowing us to calculate real and accurate financial guarantees.
  • Environmental accident expertise
In situations of environmental claims, we offer technical expertise. We determine responsibilities, quantify damages, evaluate environmental restoration solutions specific to each incident and under a cost-efficient criterion.
  • Development and implementation of the ALERT EHS service
We implement contingency and prevention systems, environmental incident response contracts, design and execution of drills and operational training to reduce the economic impact if an accident occurs, as well as coordination with relevant authorities if necessary.
  • Specialized sectorial advice
We work with many industrial sectors: refineries, solar thermal power plants, natural gas distribution and storage, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, waste management, among others. Each one with its specific risks and applicable regulations; we adapt our assessments to the specific sector, local scenario and legislation in force.

Advantages of relying on EHS Techniques

  • Early detection of risks: avoidance of costly liabilities, sanctions, unexpected reputational impacts.
  • Better financial planning: have actual estimates of environmental liabilities and enforceable guarantees.
  • Strict compliance with the Spanish and European legal framework for environmental responsibility, sector regulations and local requirements, reducing legal exposure.
  • Cost reduction in the event of accidents through specific and effective protocols (EHS ALERT), minimizing damages and expenses inherent to repairs, penalties or operational interruptions.
  • Security for investors and stakeholders: greater transparency, better asset valuation, confidence of financial institutions or buyers when managing risks.

Our working method

  1. Initial diagnosis
We review legal documentation, authorizations, environmental history, previous reports, physically inspect the facilities and environment, identify exposure routes and possible sources of impact.
  2. Quantitative assessment and monetization
We perform detailed environmental risk analyses, project possible damage scenarios, estimate restoration costs, mitigation, penalties and financial liability.
  3. Development of ALERT EHS
Design of contingency and emergency plans, drills, rapid response contracts, training of internal personnel, definition of roles in the event of incidents, coordination with suppliers and environmental authorities.
  4. Implementation, follow-up and continuous improvement
We accompany the execution of recommendations, monitor compliance with mitigation plans, review financial guarantees and adapt according to changes in regulations, sectors or operating conditions.

Environmental risk management – Frequently asked questions

Through a rigorous methodology based on the UNE 150008 standard and the evaluation of a professional specialist in environmental claims and associated damages.

Fault trees and accident literature are used to assess probability, as well as specific diffusion models for each environmental vector to assess the extent and intensity of damage.

ARMAs must be carried out on a mandatory basis in all those facilities that must present a mandatory financial guarantee according to order ARM / 1783/2011 of June 22, basically those that require Integrated Environmental Authorization (AAI) and also when there is a substantial modification of this.

There are many other facilities that are not affected by these regulations but may have a high environmental risk either because of their vulnerable environment or because of the type of facility. In this case, it is advisable to carry out a voluntary ARMA or, at least, to carry out a diagnosis (DRMA) to identify the main risks and establish recommendations regarding the management of these risks.

Yes, a correct identification and management of environmental risks, as well as a prevention and contingency plan are basic tools to demonstrate diligent management to my insurance company.

ALERT contracts ensure a high level of knowledge of the environmental risks of our installation, as well as a rapid and effective response in the event of an environmental accident.
