Portugal continues to transform its electricity matrix. According to the latest report by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), the country is moving forward with the integration of clean sources into its energy system.

Electricity sector figures (Period: June 2025 – May 2026)
- Renewable production: 44,125 GWh were recorded, representing a 2% reduction compared to the previous year.
- Share of integration: The green coverage rate stood at 63.2%, dropping 2.5 percentage points compared to 2025.
- Main technologies: Wind and hydropower lead the mix, accounting for 71.8% of renewable electricity generation.
Solar energy growth and installed capacity
Electricity generation capacity has undergone significant changes due to the increase in solar photovoltaic power:
- Total power: Portugal reaches 22.5 GW of installed renewable capacity.
- Solar capacity: Photovoltaic technology reaches 7.2 GW of installed capacity, surpassing wind energy, which stands at 6.2 GW.
- Self-consumption: Decentralized production facilities total 3.3 GW, with an increase of 716 MW since 2024.Autoconsumo: Las instalaciones de producción descentralizada suman 3,3 GW, con un incremento de 716 MW desde 2024.
Geographical distribution of production
The utilization of energy resources is distributed across the territory as follows:
- North and Center: Account for 80% of the country’s renewable production.
- Center: Generates 50% of the national wind energy.
- Alentejo: Standard-bearer in the solar sector, standing out as the region that concentrates the majority of the large-scale photovoltaic capacity installed in the country.
Position in the European context
At the European level, Portugal remains the 4th country in the European Union with the highest percentage of renewable energy in its electricity generation, surpassed only by Austria, Sweden, and Denmark.
