The new ISO 14064:2019 standard, which came into force in 2022, defines the limits for the calculation and reporting of a company’s carbon footprint and introduces the concept of significance study, which allows the evaluation of significant indirect emitting sources according to internal criteria

GHG inventory and MITECO registration of a production plant in Spain

EHS Techniques helps you to calculate your plant’s Carbon Footprint and record your GHG emissions with MITECO, following the emitting source categories of the new ISO 14064:2019 standard. This new standard came into effect in 2022, and introduces the concept of significance study, which makes it possible to assess significant indirect emitting sources based on internal criteria. In addition, a mechanism must be established to identify these indirect emissions and justify them. EHS Techniques has already accompanied several companies and production plants in the calculation of GHG emissions, the preparation of the necessary documents for the audit with MITECO, until obtaining the “Calculo-Reduzco” and “Calculo-Reduzco-Compenso” certificacion.

Project scope

The scope of these projects included the complete inventory and verification of GHG emissions across direct and indirect sources, ensuring full compliance with ISO 14064:2019 and MITECO requirements.

Activities carried out by EHS Techniques included:

  • Defining organizational and operational boundaries.
  • Collecting activity data and emission factors across all scopes (1, 2, and relevant Scope 3).
  • Developing a significance assessment framework to identify material indirect emissions.
  • Preparing the GHG report and supporting documentation for audit and verification.
  • Managing the online submission and registration process with MITECO.

Methodology

Our approach integrated international standards (ISO 14064, GHG Protocol) with Spanish regulatory requirements, ensuring methodological consistency and audit readiness.

EHS Techniques applied a data-driven verification process, including:

  1. Validation of activity data and energy consumption records.
  2. Calculation of emissions using official MITECO and IPCC factors.
  3. Internal consistency checks and uncertainty analysis.
  4. Preparation of evidence files for third-party verification.
  5. Support during auditor queries and review process.

Outcomes and added value

As a result of this work, several clients successfully obtained the “Calculo–Reduzco” and “Calculo–Reduzco–Compenso” seals, demonstrating:

  • Verified calculation of their corporate carbon footprint.
  • Reduction plans aligned with continuous improvement objectives.
  • Compensation of residual emissions through approved carbon offset projects.

These achievements enhance corporate transparency, regulatory compliance, and ESG performance, reinforcing clients’ environmental commitments and public reputation.

Closing statement

With extensive experience in carbon accounting and regulatory compliance, EHS Techniques supports organizations in achieving verified and traceable GHG inventories, paving the way toward decarbonization and alignment with national climate policies.
