EIA: Prospección de Desmán Ibérico para un EIA de reparación de un Viaducto sobre el río Truchas (Zamora)

EIA: Iberian Desman survey for an EIA for the repair of a viaduct over the Truchas river (Zamora).

Within the framework of an environmental assessment study, a survey of the Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaica) was carried out to verify whether the species is present in the study area and to propose corrective measures.

Project scope

The study focused on:

  • Surveying and habitat characterization along the Truchas River and its tributaries within the project influence area.
  • Detection of signs of presence (tracks, feeding remains, excrement) of Galemys pyrenaicus using standardized field protocols.
  • Assessment of potential impacts from the viaduct repair activities, including alterations to water quality, noise disturbance, and habitat fragmentation.
  • Proposal of corrective measures aimed at minimizing direct and indirect effects on the species and its habitat.

Methodology

EHS Techniques applied a species-specific survey protocol in accordance with Spanish and EU conservation guidelines for Galemys pyrenaicus, combining:

  1. Field reconnaissance and habitat mapping
    • Detailed inspection of riparian habitats to evaluate their suitability for the species.
    • Use of GIS tools for spatial analysis of potential territories.
  2. Species detection and ecological monitoring
    • Identification of field evidence and potential refuges.
    • Collection of complementary environmental data (flow conditions, substrate, vegetation cover).
  3. Impact assessment and mitigation planning
    • Analysis of project activities with respect to the species’ sensitivity to disturbance.
    • Design of preventive and compensatory measures to ensure the continuity of local populations.

Results and added value

The survey confirmed the ecological value of the river section and provided technical guidance for mitigation strategies compatible with the species’ conservation. The results were integrated into the overall EIA documentation, ensuring:

  • Compliance with regional and national biodiversity protection frameworks.
  • Incorporation of measures to prevent disturbance during construction activities.
  • Enhancement of environmental management practices in infrastructure maintenance projects.

This project highlights the relevance of conducting targeted faunal surveys for sensitive species prior to works in ecologically significant areas.

Closing statement

Through this study, EHS Techniques reinforced its expertise in ecological assessment and biodiversity conservation, supporting infrastructure projects that are both technically sound and environmentally responsible.
